What is Overvoltage? How Can I Protect My Motor?

Wednesday: March 11, 2015 : Blog

Overvoltage occurs when the supply voltage rises above the rated voltage of the equipment or motor. The overvoltage can cause excessive current to flow as well as creating excessive voltage stresses. In both cases, the electrical insulation system inside the motor or equipment can be degraded reducing life or causing damage.

Overvoltage can be caused by poor regulation of a power source from a utility company, oversized transformers, uneven or varying circuit loading, wiring errors, and electrical insulation or isolation failures.

A three-phase monitor relay is a cost-effective and easy to install solution to prevent costly damage from an overvoltage condition to motors and equipment. Macromatic's three-phase monitor relay, also known as a phase failure relay, can protect against premature equipment failure by monitoring for several common fault conditions including overvoltage. A three-phase monitor relay notifies of a fault condition and offers control contacts to turn off equipment or motors before damage occurs. These relays provide a clear indication of the fault present for rapid troubleshooting and reduced downtime.

Three-phase motors and other equipment are commonly used in a variety of industries:

  • HVAC
  • Mining
  • Pumping
  • Elevator
  • Crane
  • Lift
  • Generator
  • Irrigation
  • Petro-Chem
  • Wastewater
  • And more

Macromatic offers three-phase monitor relays (phase failure relays) specifically engineered for detecting phase overvoltage issues. Learn more about Macromatic's Three-Phase Monitor Relays to protect equipment and prevent expensive repairs.
