Time Delay Relay Functions w/ Different ON & OFF Times

Wednesday: November 4, 2015 : Time Delay Relays

Issue:

I have noticed that most time delay relays with functions such as Repeat Cycle, Delayed Interval & ON/OFF Delay have as standard the same range available for both ON & OFF times. I need a 5 second ON time and a 30 minute OFF time, but no available one range covers both times. What can I do?

Solution/Resolution:

It is true that these functions have the same range for both ON & OFF times as standard. However, Macromatic has several product lines where different ranges for ON & OFF times can be selected and adjusted independent of each another. We offer a choice of plug-in & encapsulated mounting styles along with analog & digital set.

TR-5 Series Plug-in

Our products with dual ON & OFF times are normally listed in a catalog with only one time range (and hence one suffix, i.e., TR-55122-05 is a Repeat Cycle function with an ON & OFF time range of 0.1-10 seconds). While the ON & OFF times can be independently adjusted within the range, i.e., you can set an ON time of 8 seconds & an OFF time of 2 seconds, you cannot set either time outside the single range of the product.

The TR-5 dual function products can be ordered with different time ranges–one for the ON time and one for the OFF time. For example, if you want a repeat cycle time delay relay with ON time first range of 0.1-10 seconds and the OFF time second with a range of 0.6-60 minutes, you add two time range suffixes to the catalog number instead of one, i.e., TR-55122-05-10.

Please note that the first time suffix in the catalog number indicates the first timing range of the unit (t1) and the second suffix indicates the second time range (t2). Whether the first suffix (time range) indicates ON or OFF time depends on the function. Click here for more information on understanding how these functions work.

  • TR-531, TR-561 & TR-565 Series functions have the OFF time first (t1), hence the first suffix indicates the OFF time range, and the ON time second, meaning the second suffix indicates the ON time (t2)
  • TR-541 & TR-551 Series functions have the ON time first (t1), hence the first suffix indicates the ON time range, and the OFF time second, meaning the second suffix indicates the OFF time (t2)

For example, our TR-53122-05-08 is a repeat cycle with an OFF time first of 0.1-10 seconds followed by an ON time of 0.6-60 seconds. Our TR-55122-09-22 is a repeat cycle with an ON time first of 1.2-120 seconds followed by an OFF time of 0.1-10 minutes.

TR-6 Series Time RangerTM Plug-in

This product family is perfect for solving the challenge of different time ranges for ON & OFF times without having to order a special product. TR-6 Series functions with dual ON & OFF times come with 16 different time ranges built-in for both ON & OFF times, ranging from 0.6 seconds to 24 hours (see table at right). Each allows you to independently select any of the 16 ranges for the ON time & any of the 16 ranges for the OFF time and then independently adjust each one within the selected range. For example, say you want an ON time of 5 seconds & OFF time of 30 minutes. You would select Dial Setting C (2.5-10.5 seconds) for the ON time and Dial Setting K (11-45 minutes), and adjust within each selected time range using the potentiometer.

Similar to the TR-5 dual function products, whether the ON or OFF time occurs first depends on the function:

  • TR-631, TR-661 & TR-665 Series functions have the OFF time first (t1) and the ON time second (t2)
  • The TR-651 Series function has the ON time first (t1) and the OFF time second (t2)

TD-8 Series Digital-Set Plug-in

Like the TR-5 Series products, TD-8 Series products with dual functions are normally listed in a catalog with only one time range (and hence one suffix, i.e., TD-85122-40, a Repeat Cycle function with an ON & OFF time range of 0.1-102.3 seconds). While the ON & OFF times can be independently adjusted within the range, i.e., you can set an ON time of 60 seconds & an OFF time of 20 seconds, you cannot set either time outside the single range of the product.

The TD-8 dual function products can be ordered with different time ranges–one for the ON time and one for the OFF time. For example, if you want a repeat cycle time delay relay with ON time first range of 0.1-102.3 seconds and the OFF time second with a range of 1-1,023 minutes, you add two time range suffixes to the catalog number instead of one, i.e., TD-85122-40-43.

Please note that the first time suffix in the catalog number indicates the first timing range of the unit (t1) and the second suffix indicates the second time range (t2). Whether the first suffix (time range) indicates ON or OFF time depends on the function. Click here for more information on understanding how these functions work.

  • The TD-831 Series function has the OFF time first, hence the first suffix indicates the OFF time range (t1), and the ON time second, meaning the second suffix indicates the ON time (t2)
  • The TD-851 Series function has the ON time first, hence the first suffix indicates the ON time range (t1), and the OFF time second, meaning the second suffix indicates the OFF time (t2)

For example, our TD-83122-42-41 is a repeat cycle with an OFF time first of 10-10,230 seconds followed by an ON time of 1-1,023 seconds. Our TD-85122-42-40 is a repeat cycle with an ON time first of 10-10,230 seconds followed by an OFF time of 0.1-102.3 seconds.

THR Series (Relay Output) and THS Series (Solid State Output) Encapsulated

Dual function products are normally listed in a catalog with only one time range (and hence one suffix, i.e., THR-15162-31 is a Repeat Cycle function with an ON & OFF time range of 1-100 seconds). While the ON & OFF times can be independently adjusted within the range, i.e., you can set an ON time of 10 seconds & an OFF time of 30 seconds, you cannot set either time outside the single range of the product.

Both THR & THS dual function products can be ordered with different time ranges–one for the ON time and one for the OFF time. For example, if you want a repeat cycle time delay relay with ON time first range of 0.1-10 seconds and the OFF time second with a range of 1-100 minutes, you add two time range suffixes to the catalog number instead of one, i.e., THR-15162-30-33.

Please note that the first time suffix in the catalog number indicates the first timing range of the unit (t1) and the second suffix indicates the second time range (t2). Whether the first suffix (time range) indicates ON or OFF time depends on the function. Click here for more information on understanding how these functions work.

  • THR-131, THR-161 & THR-165 Series and THS-131, THS-161 & THS-165 Series functions have the OFF time first (t1), hence the first suffix indicates the OFF time range, and the ON time second, meaning the second suffix indicates the ON time (t2)
  • THR-141 & THR-165 Series and THS-141 & THS-165 Series functions have the ON time first (t1), hence the first suffix indicates the ON time range, and the OFF time second, meaning the second suffix indicates the OFF time (t2)

For example, our THR-13162-04-32 is a repeat cycle with an OFF time first of 0.05-5 seconds followed by an ON time of 0.1-10 minutes. Our THS-1514A-31-33 is a repeat cycle with an ON time first of 1-100 seconds followed by an OFF time of 1-100 minutes.
