Why UL 913 8th Edition Certification Matters?

Thursday: June 20, 2019 : Intrinsically Safe Barrier Relays

Intrinsically Safe devices are not yet required to meet UL 913 8th Edition. So why does certification to the more stringent 8th Edition matter?

  1. Increased safety can reduce the risk of damage to facilities and injury to personnel that occur when an explosive atmosphere is ignited. UL913 8th Edition requires greater safety factors, increased redundancy, and superior fault tolerance for safety critical components.
  2. Longevity of safety certifications is essential. When a safety standard is withdrawn, time-consuming re-engineering of the system is required followed by costly recertification. Previous editions of UL913 have been around for many years; those that have not already been withdrawn, are under constant threat. Using components certified to UL913 8th Edition provides a reliable certification for the future of your system.
  3. International harmonization of standards and certifications is essential in order to successfully penetrate global markets. To gain certification acceptance throughout the world, safety standards must be internationally accepted or “harmonized”. UL913 8th edition is fully harmonized with the requirements of the 60079 series of standards recognized by IEC, EN, and many other national standards authorities around the world. Components certified to UL913 8th Edition position systems for global acceptance.
